KG Leichtgehen defeats Soviet attempt to take Hertford!

My son and I played another game this weekend. It worked out to be a Breakthrough with him being the attacker. I had setup the table with a large town (Hertford) in the center. I got to use my brand new road sets! The point totals were 1750.

SETUP AND DEPLOYMENT

UNITS IN RESERVE
Soviet Strelkovy
  • 1st Strelkovy Company
  • 2nd Strelkovy Company
  • SMG Company
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • None

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: The Soviets deployed their Artillery battalion in the north along with their heavy mortars in the treeline west and north of the artillery battalion. The AT Sections were formed into a platoon by the 2iC and had the BN Cmd and Komissar attached. They were deployed behind the woods north of the western exit road. The flank march consisted of the two Strelkovy companies and the SMG company.

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): Because I only had one "mobile" platoon, I was able to start with every platoon on the board. The AT gun platoon setup in the woods north of the eastern exit road with a line of fire towards the objectives. Second Platoon setup in the town occupying the train station and a few other buildings. First platoon is occupying foxholes just south of the eastern exit road. The Panzer platoon was deployed along the main road.

The two objectives can be seen to the south of the town. On the left, the Gebirgsjäger are forming a screen to protect the firing positions of the guns. The 88's are just visible south of the barren field. The nebelwerfers are deployed to the left in some woods.

TURN 1

A Mk IV knocked out by a T34

HQ mortars smoke the Soviet artillery battalion

The Nebelwerfer observer calls in fire onto the AT platoon

The 88 battery scores a couple long range kills!

A panzerschreck adds another bail and the T34s are hurting

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 1 MK IV

TURN 1 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: The T34/85 platoon cautiously moves up to get better shots. They get a good number of hits on the Gebirgsjäger and have several that seem to hit home only to be negated by the foxholes. The T34 platoon commander shoots at one of the MK IVs and registers a kill. Neither the heavy mortars nor the 122mm howitzers range in on their respective targets. The 76mm guns direct fire against 2nd FJ Platoon scoring some hits and a kill.

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): Major Leichtgehen, realizing that he needs to contest the objectives against a horde of approaching Soviet infantry starts moving the 1st FJ Platoon and the AT gun platoon towards the objectives so they can dig-in and try to hold off the advancing horde.

The HQ mortar platoon smokes the 76mm ZIS-3 guns of the artillery battalion.
Nebelwerfers target the Soviet AT Platoon and pin it. The 88 battery shoots at the T34s and manages to get two kills and a bail at long range. A panzerschreck team, attached to 2nd FJ Platoon, hits and bails another T-34.

At this point, the platoon needs to take a morale check which it promptly fails... Scratch one Tank Platoon!

TURN 2

Situation on the right.

Situation on the left.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
  • Artillery Battalion - 1 76mm ZIS-3
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 1 MK IV

TURN 2 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: Not much happens this turn.

The 122mm howitzers fail to range in again. The ZIS-3 guns fail to score any hits against 2nd Platoon in the buildings and the heavy mortars get no hits when they range in on the nebelwerfer smoke trails. The AT platoon remains pinned. A status that will plague them for most of the game...

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): The HQ mortars smoke the ZIS-3 guns again. The 88's manage to get one of the ZIS-3 guns that is on the south side of the smoke and the nebelwerfers score some hits on the AT platoon keeping it "double secret pinned".

TURN 3

Situation on the right.

Situation on the left.

One of the nebelwefers is put out of action!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
  • Artillery Battalion - 2 76mm ZIS-3

KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 1 MK IV
  • Nebelwerfer Platoon - 1 15cm launcher

TURN 3 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: Soviets do not get reserves this turn. The artillery battalion fires at the nebelwerfers and manages a hit that pins them. The heavy mortars also fire on the nebelwerfers and kill one of the launchers!

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): 1st FJ Platoon digs in on the objectives with the AT gun platoon backing them up. For some reason I forgot to dig the guns in too! Arrrrgggghh!

The nebelwerfers score a kill against the heavy mortars and the 88's score a kill against the ZIS-3 guns. The remaining fire was ineffective.

TURN 4

Here they come boys! Soviet Rifle Companies arrive...

Nebelwerfers pounded again

Heavy mortars try to take out a Mk IV

The Mk IVs move out to try to help with the Soviet infantry.

We need to kill them as fast as possible!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
  • Artillery Battalion - 3 76mm ZIS-3
  • Heavy Mortar Company - 1 120mm mortar
  • 2nd Rifle Company - 4 Rifle/MG
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 1 MK IV
  • Nebelwerfer Platoon - 1 15cm launcher

TURN 4 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: The Soviet reserves start to arrive and head straight for the objectives!

The artillery battalion repeats its bombardment on the nebelwerfers and manage to pin them. The heavy mortars score a hit on the Mk IV in the village, but it is saved. The rifle companies fire on 1st FJ platoon, but only score a hit which is saved.

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): We now have a target rich environment!

The Mk IVs manage 5 hits with 1 kill on the 2nd Rifle Company. The 1st FJ Platoon gets a further 8 hits and 3 kills thus pinning the the 2nd Rifle Company. The AT guns, and the rest of 1st Platoon score minimal hits, with no casualties, on the Soviet 1st Rifle Company. The HQ mortar platoon manages a 1 shot-1kill hit on the ZIS-3 guns of the artillery battalion!

TURN 5

The reinforcements fill the gaps...

Soviets target the panzer platoon and score one kill

The rest of the platoon comes on line.

The Gebirgsjäger move towards the Soviet flank march.

Nebelwerfers pound the Soviet artillery

More riflemen die for the Motherland!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
  • Artillery Battalion - 3 76mm ZIS-3, 2 122mm howitzers
  • Heavy Mortar Company - 2 120mm mortar
  • 2nd Rifle Company - 6 Rifle/MG
  • 1st Rifle Company - 5 Rifle/MG
  • SMG Company - 4 SMG stands
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 2 MK IV
  • Nebelwerfer Platoon - 1 15cm launcher

TURN 5 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: The SMG company comes on as a reserve and quickly fills in the gaps in the 2nd Company's formation who remain pinned this turn even after the Komissar makes an example of a few frontniks.

The artillery battalion ranges in on the panzer platoon and scores one kill! 1st and 2nd Rifle Companies fail to hit any of the defenders dug-in on the objectives.

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): The nebelwerfers score three kills on the artillery battalion and the heavy mortars! Mk IV tanks score 4 kills on the SMG company. The AT guns and the 1st Platoon manage 5 kills on 1st Rifle Company and pin them down.

TURN 6

Komissars lead the infantry forward!

The panzer platoon is gutted.

The Gebirgsjäger take some shells and rethink their involvement...

1st Company assaults!

...and are driven back by withering defensive fire...

The 2nd Company gives it a try!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
  • Artillery Battalion - 3 76mm ZIS-3, 2 122mm howitzers
  • Heavy Mortar Company - 2 120mm mortar
  • 2nd Rifle Company - 9 Rifle/MG
  • 1st Rifle Company - 10 Rifle/MG
  • SMG Company - 6 SMG stands
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 4 MK IV
  • Nebelwerfer Platoon - 1 15cm launcher
  • Gebirgsjäger Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG

TURN 6 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: The komissars make their presence felt and rally the men, after making further examples of a few cowards! The wave moves forward, pins down 1st FJ Platoon, and then assaults them! The two assaults are beaten back with enough casualties to stop the assaults.

The artillery battalion repeats its bombardment from last turn, but this time they have an even juicier target as the panzer platoon has lined up to shoot the Soviet riflemen. (I forgot about the repeat and didn't see the ranged in marker!) The fire is accurate and two more Mk IVs go up in flames! The platoon leader was one of the ones hit. He transfers command to the last remaining vehicle and manages to keep the crew in the fight!

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): Major Leichtgehen calls in the HQ mortars onto the 2nd Rifle Company and scores two more kills! That will be enough to force a morale check!

The SMG Company attracts the fire of the 88's and a few Gebirgsjäger stands resulting in 2 stands lost. First FJ Platoon and the AT gun platoon fire into the remnants of the 1st and 2nd Rifle Companies scoring 3 more teams killed between them. This all forces morale checks on the rifle companies. 1st Company passes, but the komissar is needed to keep the 2nd Company in the fight!

TURN 7

The artillery battalion shifts its fire directly onto the Gebirgsjägers

The brave riflemen form up for one more try!

But when the smoke clears they are beaten and must retreat...

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy
  • Tankovy Platoon - 5 T34/85 tanks
  • Artillery Battalion - 3 76mm ZIS-3, 2 122mm howitzers
  • Heavy Mortar Company - 2 120mm mortar
  • 2nd Rifle Company -13 Rifle/MG
  • 1st Rifle Company - 10 Rifle/MG, komissar
  • SMG Company - 11 SMG stands
KG Leichtgehen (FJ)
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 1 Rifle/MG
  • Panzer Platoon - 4 MK IV
  • Nebelwerfer Platoon - 1 15cm launcher
  • Gebirgsjäger Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG
  • AT Gun Platoon - 1 PaK 40

TURN 7 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy: The Soviet rifle companies are near their breaking point. First Company's komissar makes an example of another comrade, but the men have had enough and kill the komissar. No one sees anything wrong with it and they continue trying to hide from the withering fire.

Second Rifle Company remains pinned after the komissar is too far away to have any real effect on the morale of the unit.

The SMG Company rallies and moves up to try their hand at taking the German defenders down. Their charge is predictably stopped by horendous MG and AT gun fire from the defending Fallschirmjägers.

The artillery and the heavy mortars manage a few more kills, but it's not enough to turn the tide.

KG Leichtgehen (FJ): The Soviet riflemen are almost beaten, but we need to keep firing to hurry them along!

The 88's and lone Mk IV get 4 kills on 2nd Rifle Company. 1st FJ Platoon fires on the SMG Company and scores 3 kills. The AT gun platoon manages 1 kill on 1st Rifle Company.

The two Rifle Companies then decide they've had enough and quit the field. Leaving the remnants of the SMG company to hold the ground...
At this point we "hand waved" our way through the 8th turn where it mattered and I was able to take out the SMG Company too, so we called the game after Turn 7.

My son's play was much improved and I helped by making a couple mental mistakes forgetting to do some things!

One thing that turned out well was that my son attached the two observers (artillery & heavy mortars) to the Rifle Companies so that they could have some fire support on their side of the table. Most of the rest of my forces could be spotted directly so they weren't needed at the beginning of the game.

All-in-all a really fun game. Now I'll have to dream up a breakout scenario as the German parachute assault was just a hamlet too far...

KG Leichtgehen Lands in Hertford!

Cauldron, 1480 points, Germans were attacker Kampfgruppe Leichtgehen jumped into Hertfordshire as part of Operation Nibelungenlied (the encirclement of London). The KG made a daytime drop and moved to secure two important crossroad villages. As the various platoons were converging on the area, they ran into a Soviet artillery detachment that was engaged in a live fire exercise. Later we found out that the unit was a Red Army Strelkovy battalion that had newly arrived in England and was being trained up before being assigned to one of the Guards Divisions. Major Leichtgehen immediately set about organizing an attack on the gun positions. Just as the attack was about to start, unseen Soviet infantry opened up on the FJ.

SETUP AND DEPLOYMENT

Right Side

Left Side

UNITS IN RESERVE
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army
  • 2nd Company
  • SMG Company
  • Light Tankovy Company
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ)
  • 3rd FJ Platoon
  • HQ Mortar Platoon
  • FJ AT Gun Platoon

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The Soviets started with the Mortar Co, Artillery BN, and the 1st Strelkovy Co on the board. The artillery and mortars setup along the backline of the deployment area with the Strelkovy in immediate ambush. Once he saw where my units were deployed, he deployed the infantry company around the right hand objective as seen on the photo.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): In Cauldron, my deployment is completely random. I started with the 1st FJ Platoon and it ended up on the Soviet right near the mortar company. The 2nd FJ Platoon was in the corner near the artillery battalion. Just about where I would have wanted them if I were placing them myself! The FJ mortar platoon was placed in the bottom right quadrant ready to fire over the intervening hill at the Soviet artillery. Then he sprang the immediate ambush and the mortars realized they had just setup in the infantry's kill zone.

TURN 1

Soviet Artillery ranges in on the mortar platoon.

FJ Mortars ranging in on part of 1st Strelkovy Co.

1st FJ Platoon kills a dug-in heavy mortar!

Stukas attack the artillery battalion.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army
  • Heavy Mortar Co - 3 120mm mortars
  • Artillery BN - 2 ZIS-3 guns
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ)
  • 1st FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG

TURN 1 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The Soviets didn't do any fancy maneuvering, they just opened up with everything they had. The 1st Strelkovy Co fired at the 2nd FJ Platoon, but completely missed. They must have been surprised to see Germans this far north! The other part of the company has a little better luck firing on the FJ mortar platoon, but could not cause any damage either. The Soviet mortar platoon was too close to use their weapons, so they defended their positions with rifle fire resulting in some hits, but no damage. The Soviet artillery battery used their special rule to fire some of the ZIS-3 guns in direct fire at the 2nd FJ platoon to no effect. Meanwhile the 122mm howitzers ranged in on the FJ mortar platoon causing them to be pinned.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): Major Leichtgehen calls in air support on the Soviet artillery resulting in several hits. The firepower of those large bombs dig out two of the ZIS-3 guns. The FJ mortars range in on 1st Strelkovy and manage to pin them down. 2nd FJ Platoon, lead by Maj. Leichtgehen, opens up into the Soviet artillery park managing devestating numbers of hits, but on succeeds in pinning down the gunners. The 1st FJ platoon surgically hits and destroys one of the heavy mortars. Knowing they will only face rifle fire, they charge into contact with the heavy mortars. Defensive fire is withering knocking out two FJ stands, but it is not enough to stop the assault. The FJ get in amongst the foxholes and knock out two of the mortars. The rest break and run, but they were far enough away that they were able to take their mortars with them. With all of the firepower still in the area, 1st Platoon retreats into the treeline to await further developments.

TURN 2

Top of Turn 2

The mortars are on the run!

1st Strelkovy assaults the FJ mortar platoon...

... and wipe it out to a man!

1st FJ platoon shoots down the Soviet heavy mortars.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

  • Heavy Mortar Co - 6 120mm mortars, leader
  • Artillery BN - 3 ZIS-3 guns
  • 1st Strelkovy Co - leader
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ)
  • 1st FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG
  • FJ Mortar Platoon - Cmd, 4 8cm mortars

TURN 2 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The Soviet commanders have their hands full getting their troops up out of their foxholes, but they manage to unpin everyone! The ZIS-3 guns for a gunline facing the 2nd FJ platoon. The movement takes longer than expected and they score no decisive hits on the Germans. The Heavy mortars are ordered to fire from where they stand! They don't manage to hit anything... Maybe they are worried about being exposed in the open? 1st Strelkovy moves towards the FJ mortar platoon to setup an assault. Their fire is ineffective. They get the observer to call in fire on the mortars, but that proves ineffective too. Boris, the 1st Company commander, orders his men to charge the mortar position anyway! The defensive fire is surprisingly effective killing one team, but not good enough to stop the assault. The Soviet infantry gets in amongst the German mortar teams and cuts them down. The mortar platoon is completely wiped out.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): Maj. Leichtgehen calls in air support again. This time they attack the 1st Strelkovy company. They home in on what appears to be an officer figure exhorting his troops... After the smoke clears, Boris is no more. 1st FJ Platoon shoots at the remaining Soviet heavy mortars killing the crewman where they stand. The leader fails the Sole Survivor test and the company is destroyed. 2nd Platoon fires at the artillery battalion targeting the ZIS-3 guns. They manage 13 hits, but the gunshields save all but one of the guns!

TURN 3

Situation on right.

Situation on left.

German Stukas attack again!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army
  • Heavy Mortar Co - 6 120mm mortars, leader
  • Artillery BN - 4 ZIS-3 guns, 2 122mm howitzers
  • 1st Strelkovy Co - leader, 5 Rifle/MG
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ)
  • 1st FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG
  • FJ Mortar Platoon - Cmd, 4 8cm mortars

TURN 3 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The Soviet commander frantically calls for reserves, but there is no answer. The Strelkovy and ZIS-3 guns fire on the 2nd FJ Platoon and cause enough hits to pin it, but do no further damage. The BN adjutant takes over as 1st Strelkovy's company commander.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): Major Leichtgehen has the Luftwaffe's number today and is able to call in the Stukas on the Soviet Strelkovy again killing three stands. 1st Platoon shoots at the Soviet howitzers but is ineffective as the crewman hunker down in their holes. They take advantage of this and close to assualt. Defensive fire is light and the attack goes in killing two gun teams. 2nd Platoon fires at the ZIS-3 guns is able to get enough shots through the gunshields to make another gun silent. 3rd FJ Platoon arrives and extends the line along the left of 2nd platoon. They are ordered to engage the Soviet strelkovy. They are fairly effective killing two teams.

TURN 4

Right

Left

T-70s arrive!

1st Strelkovy assaults 3rd Platoon!

The defensive fire takes out a few stands.

Stukas arrive again and target the T-70s!

Stukas arrive again and target the T-70s!

More FJ reinforcements arrive.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army
  • Heavy Mortar Co - 6 120mm mortars, leader

  • 1st FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG
  • FJ Mortar Platoon - Cmd, 4 8cm mortars
  • 3rd FJ Platoon - 5 Rifle/MG
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG

TURN 4 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The squeak of tank treads can be heard in the distance! Hope soars as a company of light tanks appears! They fire at the newly arrived 3rd FJ Platoon and manage to cause damage and pin them down! 1st Strelkovy is still recovering from the shock of the losing their beloved Boris and manage a desultory fire. The ZIS-3 guns fire at the 2nd FJ Platoon and are able to dig two teams out of their foxholes! 1st Strelkovy is roused to the assault by the 2iC and charge the 3rd FJ platoon! A withering defensive fire knocks down dozens of Soviet riflemen and the assault halts and goes to ground.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): Major Leichtgehen joins 3rd FJ Platoon and manages to direct the Stukas onto the newly arrived T-70 tanks. (There was about a 1" difference in where the 16" from my troops stopped and the 4" placement area for aircraft ended. It was very close!) The Stukas destroy two T-70's and bail one out. The FJ AT gun platoon and the HQ mortars show up behind the 2nd and 3rd Platoons. Now Major Leichtgehen has a all of his tools! 3rd FJ Platoon fires at the Soviet 1st Strelkovy and decimates 4 teams (very low save rolls!). The company had very few men left, but they manage to hang around! Major Leichtgehen orders 3rd Platoon to assault the remnant of the Strelkovy, but is stopped by some well aimed MG fire from the T-70 company! 2nd Platoon fires at the remaining ZIS-3 guns and disables another team. 1st Platoon fires into the artillery battery and is close enough now to hit even the ZIS-3 guns from behind! This fire kills 3 of the ZIS-3 guns and 1 of the howitzers. The artillery battalion is now below half strength, but their long tradition of defending their guns keeps the crews there and in the fight!

TURN 5

Right.

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army
  • Heavy Mortar Co - 6 120mm mortars, leader
  • Artillery BN - 8 ZIS-3 guns, 3 122mm howitzers
  • 1st Strelkovy Co - leader, 14 Rifle/MG, HMG
  • Light Tankovy Company - 2 T-70s

  • 1st FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG
  • FJ Mortar Platoon - Cmd, 4 8cm mortars
  • 3rd FJ Platoon - 5 Rifle/MG
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG

TURN 5 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The Soviet reserves finally show up! Both infantry companies move onto the table and start heading towards the objectives, double timing it! They other units are so shell-shocked that they manage only minimal fire. The T-70s close on 3rd FJ Platoon, but their MGs can't find the range.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): 1st Platoon moves to the left most objective and hunkers down. 1st Strelkovy is wiped out and the BN Command staff retreat.

TURN 6

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

  • 1st FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG
  • FJ Mortar Platoon - Cmd, 4 8cm mortars
  • 3rd FJ Platoon - 5 Rifle/MG
  • 2nd FJ Platoon - 2 Rifle/MG

TURN 6 SUMMARY
Soviet Strelkovy (Red Army: The only way to contest the objective is for the Soviet infantry to double time again. Doing this, they can't actually contest until turn 7.
KG Leichtgehen (Cassino FJ): The objectives went hot and with 1st FJ platoon sitting on the objective, the game ends. Axis 5-2 victory.
What a great time with my son! We vowed to play more FOW! He did really well considering the very bad position he was in from the beginning. We talked about next time how he might want to take a little more infantry in this mission and let the guns come on later from reserve. It would have been interesting. I think he might want to try tanks next time!
